Multi-language alt text on your storefront

How generated languages reach shoppers, and which ones your store can actually serve.

Shopify keeps one alt text per image, plus one translation for each language your store publishes. A shopper sees the translation for their language, or the main alt text if there is no translation for it.

1

Choose your languages

Languages are picked in Settings for every generation, or in the Options panel for a single product. English is always first: alt text is written in English and then translated, so English cannot be removed. Each extra language adds to the credit cost of every image.

2

Languages your store publishes are served automatically

When a language you generate matches one your store publishes, the app saves it to Shopify as a translation for that image. Nothing else is needed — shoppers browsing in that language get their own version of the alt text, and so do their screen readers.

Shopify's Translate & Adapt app does not show image alt text in its editor, so this app writes those translations through Shopify's translation API directly. They are live on your storefront even though you cannot see them in Translate & Adapt.
3

Languages your store does not publish

A language your store does not publish is still generated, still stored on your Alt Text Studio account, and still costs credits — but Shopify has nowhere to serve it, so shoppers never see it. The app names those languages inline when you pick them so there are no surprises. Publish the language in your Shopify Markets settings to start serving it.

4

Change which language is the main alt text

On a product page, the row of language pills under an image lists every language generated for it, with a checkmark on the one currently stored as the main alt text. Click another pill to make it the main one. Switching costs no credits, and the translations are re-saved against the new main text so Shopify does not mark them out of date.
